Portugieser is the most common red varietal in DHC - Villány. It makes the sort of pleasant fruit forward easy drinking red that encourages festivity; low in tannin & high in drinkability. The vineyards were selected for their unique soil composition of chalk rich loess on a limestone base from throughout Villány. The vines range in age 10-40 years old. In 2010 the Portugieser harvest started in early September. The wine was vinified in stainless steel tanks with 1 week fermentation and no maceration, aged for 3 months in big (50 hl) barrels and bottled. An irresistible, fragrant, purple red delight, with wild raspberry flavors and surprising depth. This remarkable value is the result of a charismatic but maligned grape getting the royal treatment from one of Hungary’s best producers.
Wine and Spirits Magazine rated the 2009 vintage of this wine with 90 points and called it a Best Buy! |
