Portugieser is the most common red varietal in DHC - Villány. It makes the sort of pleasant fruit forward easy drinking red that encourages festivity; low in tannin & high in drinkability. The vineyards were selected for their unique soil composition of chalk rich loess on a limestone base from throughout Villány. The vines range in age 10-40 years old. 2008 was a beautiful vintage for Portugieser with harvest starting in early September. The wine was vinified in stainless steel tanks with 1 week fermentation and no maceration, aged for 3 months in big (50 hl) barrels and bottled. An irresistible, fragrant, purple red delight, with wild raspberry flavors and surprising depth. This remarkable value is the result of a charismatic but maligned grape getting the royal treatment from one of Hungary’s best producers. |
