Kabaj - Beli Pinot - 2009

Kabaj is located in the sun kissed Goriška Brda hills of Western Slovenia, neighbor to Collio, Italy. Their 29 acres of hand tended mature vines are planted to deep Marl soils left behind by an ancient sea. All wines are fermented slowly with native yeast and complete malolactic fermentation.
Kabaj Beli Pinot (Pinot Blanc) is a charming rendition of this underappreciated variety. The most delicate wine of the estate it still bears the depth of texture to be expected from Kabaj wines. Grapes were hand harvested from the vineyards of Belo-Vhr, Grbunovo, de-stemmed, and fermented with wild yeast in stainless steel tank. The wine was then transferred to used, French barrique for malolactic fermentation, and 12 months on the lees. Barrels selected for the final blend were combined in tank for settling. Quality in 2009 was so great that Beli Pinot was bottled unfiltered. If there is a Kabaj wine that does not need food, it is the Beli Pinot. Gently fruity with subtle notes of orchard blossom, a caressing mouthfeel, and a lightly oily mineral finish.
