Georgia: a visit to dreamland by Tim Atkin MW

Tim Atkin MW spent some time in Georgia recently, exploring the rich wine culture and variety of indigenous grapes. Wine is part of Georgia’s DNA, too. This is the so-called cradle of wine – grape pips have been found here that date back more than 8,000 years – but it’s so much more than a living museum. Wine is the national drink, consumed with gusto in a series of toasts and salutations at official meals, but also in countless bars and restaurants. Wine Portraits: Gogi Dakishvili of Schuchmann Wines Georgia

If you have tasted more than a few Georgian wines, chances are at least one of them was made under the watchful eyes of Gogi Dakishvili. He has made wine for one of the largest Georgian producers, Teliani Valley, and one of the smallest, Vinoterra, which is now part of the Schuchmann Wines Georgia family. He has been working as a chief wine-maker in “Schuchmann Wines Georgia” since its establishment in 2008 where he carefully and cautiously put his great experience accumulated from travel and knowledge gained from approaching world wine traditions into practice. Revenge of the Wine Spritzer

While you may not be able to recall the last time you encountered a wine spritzer, the beverage is quite popular in many countries. In fact throughout most of Eastern Europe you will find that adding a touch of sparkling water to wine is just as common as drinking wine on its own. Why? First off, wine plays a different role in Eastern European cultures than it does in the West. On this difference Stetson Robbins of Blue Danube Wines says “they view wine as less precious. Visit a Winery: Schuchmann Wines Chateau in Kakheti, Georgia

The Region Kakheti is Georgia’s largest and premier wine region. Located in the eastern part of the country, sharing borders with Russia to the northeast and Azerbaijan to the southeast. Kakheti is also culturally rich with many historic monasteries, castles, and small hilltop towns. Although Georgia is home to over 500 indigenous grape varieties, the two most popular are Saperavi (red) and Rkatsiteli (white), which thrive especially well in the region. The Winery German-born Burkhard Schuchmann founded his eponymous winery in 2008 after falling in love with Georgian wines and feeling compelled to share them on a global scale. Burkhard was always a wine connoisseur and discovered Georgia, one of the oldest wine producing regions, through his travels. The winery is located in the village of Kisiskhevi within the Kakheti wine district. It produces wines out of three vineyard sites: Napareuli, Tsinandali, and Kindzmarauli, and mostly uses native Georgian grape varieties: Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Kisi, and Saperavi.
