Veres Furmint

Demeter Zoltán Veres Furmint 2012

Demeter Zoltán, Tokaj (Hungary)
White (13.5%)
Sorry, sold out
Our Notes: Very few wines distill a vineyard and grape down to the nuts and bolts more than the 2012 Veres. With 17 harvests under his belt, Zoltán has coaxed an extremely elegant terroir driven 2012 Furmint out of this ancient site. Fermented and aged in Inox, the flavors are razor sharp and walk a thin line between sweet and savory. Where some Furmints with more residual sugar have a powerful weight to them, this wine has an ethereal lightness to it without sacrificing intensity. Drinking well now, we cannot wait to taste this with more age on it. Roast some duck or goat, wrap something fatty with cabbage leaves, and let the Furmint do the rest. Pairs extremely well with aromatic spices like Saffron as well.

90 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine for the 2011: “This comes off 30-year-old vines planted on rhyolitic tufa, very light rocks that Demeter says look like white honeycomb. The wine has a similar lightness—no doubt encouraged by his decision to vinify it entirely in tank rather than barrel—more honeysuckle than honey, more fresh orange zest than peach puree. If you're looking for a powerhouse dry Tokaji, this isn't it, but if you're interested in Tokaj's barely exploited possibilities—or simply a kinder, gentler Tokaji—this is a terrific example.
