Our Notes: Zweigelt was developed in the early 1920’s by Fritz Zweigelt. The grape is essentially the crossing of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch, so you get the spice, structure and dark blue fruit from the Blaufränkisch and the nimble Pinot Noir like elegance of St. Laurent. The 2011 vintage came with a long and relatively hot summer, so thick healthy skins were easily achieved without having to worry about botrytis. With healthy acids, spicy aromatics, and a counter intuitively light weight given the color, pair this wine with earthy dishes and anything covered in herbs with a hint of fruit to be coaxed out. Best served at cellar temperature, it’s a wine that can start and end a meal.
