Our Notes: One of the most widely planted grapes in Central Europe and a favorite of the Communists due to it’s ability to yield incredible large crops, planted in the right spot and farmed correctly, it’s diametrically opposed to the jug wines of yesteryear. In Croatia it’s called Graševina, Welchsriesling in Austria, Riesling Italico in Italy, Laški Rizling in Slovenia, and finally Olaszrizling in Hungary. Even more so, there is considerable difference between this grape and Rhine Riesling. Styles can range from light and crisp all the way to TBAs and Eisweins. In Somló, it takes on a distinct umami like weightiness. Allowed to open, the sweet saline notes are amazing. Pair with roasted, earthy and gamey flavors. In an appellation with no red wine, this fulfills that need.
