Our Notes: In speaking with Josef Maier, he’s emphatic that while Grüner Veltliner needs soil that retains a lot of water, Riesling is exactly the opposite. Not surprisingly, the Sprinzenberg vineyard is entirely primary rock (similar to the Wachau) on the northwestern edge of the estate. Not shy in terms of acidity, but the extended lees contact balances it out with a smooth texture and bright gardenia like aromatics. Intense flavors of both stone and stone fruit are free of oak and botrytis. Locals pair it with white fish (trout, char etc...) with a crisp buttered skin and Fleischlaberl (breaded minced veal or beef balls).
