Right away you can notice the Swabian roots of this wine with “Alte Reben” in German meaning “Old Vines.” Planted in 1969 in the Baranya-völgy vineyards, this site has achieved a great natural balance. Yields rarely exceed 1 kg. Fermentation took place in concrete vats followed by aging in three 10 hl and one 5 hl Hungarian oak barrels for 22 months. Lower yields and more uniformed ripeness give much more pronounced red fruit than the 2014 Kékfrankos coupled with more acidity. While not wound up and closed being so young, it’s certainly hinting at new world fruit with old world acidity. The 2013 is a great candidate for how serious and site specific Kékfrankos can be despite being the most planted red in Hungary.
