Our Notes: Királyleányka, originally from Transylvania and most likely a cross between Kövérszőlő and Leányka, is a highly regarded native white grape. And although usually consumed by large Hungarian men, the name actually translates to “Little Princess.” When made in this un-oaked reductive style, it has Muscat like aromas, tangy acidity, citrus fruit, and a mineral backbone that harks back to the volcanic soils of the Mátra mountains. Stylistically, it’s almost as if an Austrian Gruner Veltliner and a Northern Italian Pinot Grigio had a baby. Bright, fresh, and dry on the finish, it’s a great addition to the table and pairs well with light cheeses, Thai and Vietnamese dishes, and has enough acidity to tackle pork and heavier fish like Halibut. Extremely versatile and unique.
