Our Notes: If you want an introduction to Bosnian wine, the first name you need to learn is Josip Brkić. He was one of the first to really champion native Bosnian grapes such as Blahtina and Žilavka. Brkić is also working hard to put the Čitluk appellation on the map by converting his vineyards to biodynamics and utilizing Bosnian oak, practices he encourages other local producers to adopt.

The indigenous white Žilavka (zhee-lav-ka) is ideally suited to the Mediterranean climate and limestone plateaus of Čitluk where it has been grown for over a 1000 years. It is an effortless, pear and tarragon scented white lovely on its own or with light fish dishes.

Plava Greda is composed of the Blahtina grape, with the word “Greda” being the source vineyard’s name. Fermented by native yeast in local oak to soften the angular nature of the grape, it is an understated thirst inducing red of elegance and style that could be likened to Cru Beaujolais.
