Our Notes: “Orange wine” is just wine in the Republic of Georgia between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea, and Slovenia and Croatia between the Alps and Adriatic. Both areas are typified by their varied topography, climate, abundance of biological diversity and diverse native wines.

Jean-Michel Morel made his first “orange wine” in 1999 when he fermented his Jakot (formerly known as Tokaj) with the skins. Then in 2004, Jean-Michel visited the Shavnabada Monastary outside Tbilisi to study Qvevri winemaking and import his own Qvevri to Slovenia. His Amfora is a blend of Rebula, Malvazija, and Zeleni Sauvignon fermemted in Qvevri for ten months. The wine's structure is tannic and tight and the flavors more meaty than fruity.

Similarly, the Orgo Rkatsiteli is fermented in clay Qvevri, during which time the wine stays in contact with its skins, stems, and seeds. After 6 months, the wine is racked and bottled. No oak is used. The wine drinks more like a red with tannins on the palate, combined with spicy notes and a nutty finish. Try these wines with Thai food such as Beef with Chiles and Basil.
