They say perfection is the child of time. We gave ours 8,000 years of experience to grow — Burkhard Schuchmann
The winery releases wines under two different labels: the Schuchmann label is reserved for wines vinified using Western winemaking practices. See the Vinoterra winery page for wines made in traditional qvevris (underground clay vessels).
German-born Burkhard Schuchmann founded his eponymous winery in 2008 after falling in love with Georgian wines and feeling compelled to share them on a global scale. Burkhard was always a wine connoisseur and discovered Georgia, one of the oldest wine producing regions, through his travels. To manage the company's wine production, Schuchmann sought out native Georgian Georgi Dakishvili, a third generation winemaker and part-owner of a small winery called Vinoterra that was for sale at the time.
The winery is located in the village of Kisiskhevi in Eastern Georgia's Kakheti wine district. It produces wines out of three vineyard sites: Napareuli, Tsinandali, and Kindzmarauli, and mostly uses native Georgian grape varieties: Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Kisi, and Saperavi.
Not only has Schuchmann brought much deserved attention to this region but they support and enrich the area. There is a focus on hiring local workers and on education. An internship program has been co-financed by Schuchmann Wines which allows students of viticulture to gain hands on training.
